MISSION

Gentle, personalized dental hygiene care with a holistic approach.

We know all our systems are connected – what is happening in our mouths can represent what is happening in our bodies and vice versa. There is a connection between gum (periodontal) disease and our systemic conditions such as heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, and arthritis, including contributing to low birth-weight babies in pregnant mothers.

That’s why The Happy Hygienist uses a holistic approach to treatment; a mindful method of treating the whole person, mind and body. We collaborate with other professionals like dentists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, massage therapists, holistic nutritionists, naturopaths, life coaches, counselors and intuitive healers, creating a health team that looks after every part of your well being. Good oral health contributes to excellent whole body health – and good oral health starts here.

...and no "standard" X-Rays

No need to be worried about radiation because a unit is not attached to one of the walls in our office just “waiting” to be used. X-rays can be a valuable tool to see what’s happening to the tooth and the bone below the gumline however, we do not take regularly take x-rays unless they are needed or requested because we follow the ALARA Prinicple: “as low as reasonably achievable”. We monitor your periodontal health over time as well so please ask your dental office to forward the last set taken to: neena@thehappyhygienist.com

Biomimetic Dentistry: A Conservative Approach to Dentistry that Mimics Nature.

The Happy Hygienist now offers restorative treatment options.

Our dentist offers the Biomimetic Approach: Conserve the tooth

At The Happy Hygienist, we know that sometimes restorative treatment is needed so you can relax knowing that our dentist has a holistic outlook to dentistry. We want to take away as little of the tooth structure as possible while preserving the tooth vitality and preventing unnecessary future treatment such as root canals. We create life-like esthetic restorations with cusps and grooves; our goal is to create long-lasting restorations that prevent complications often experienced with traditional approaches. With Biomimetic dentistry, we’re able to rebuild the tooth using material that simulates natural teeth closely and holds up better to constant chewing, stressing and cracking.

Need an Extraction? Root Canal? Crown or Bridge? We offer full mouth rehabilitation. Did your last check-up uncover numerous fillings? Come in for a consultation to find out what is urgent and where you can take a wait and see approach; sometimes all you need is a Silver Diamine Fluoride application and can avoid restorative actions. Do you want metal fillings replaced? We provide you with all the knowledge and investigate the state of each tooth so you can make the best decision for your body. Biological dentistry doesn’t have to be expensive; your treatment is individualized to your specific needs and aligns with your oral health.

Feel peace of mind knowing that your oral wellbeing is our priority. We offer natural, BPA-free, formaldehyde-free dental material which can last a lifetime. We use sound tooth restorative material; when the foundation of a tooth is natural, we can build on the tooth using the highest quality material so it will remain long-lasting. Contact us for more information.

Products

Healthy Choices for Healthy Smiles.

We are passionate about educating and empowering you to make informed decision when it comes to your dental care. We respect your opinion, input and personal preference. All products we recommend and use in our office have been hand-picked based on studies and patient experience. We are happy to make recommendations about healthy products that don’t contain SLS, Triclosan or fluoride. We honour the fact that it is your health and your body. We want you to feel empowered in every aspect of your experience with us.

Xylitol

Xylitol is a natural sweetener derived from the fibrous parts of plants. It does not break down like sugar and can help keep a neutral pH level in the mouth. Xylitol also prevents bacteria from sticking to the teeth. Chewing xylitol gum alone reduces plaque by 50% and it is able to penetrate the bacteria biofilm. Xylitol gum and mints can be found in health food stores.

Curaprox Hydrosonic

Individual clinical research has shown sonic toothbrushes to be more effective than comparable electric toothbrushes in reduction of gingival inflammation; which in turn provides a great improvement in overall periodontal health! Click here to purchase a Curaprox Hydrosonic Toothbrush.

X-PUR Remin

Free of harsh foaming agents such as sodium lauryl sulfate (an ingredient used in dish soaps, liquid laundry detergents, toilet-bowl cleaners, and in the majority of all toothpastes). Remin also does not contain triclosan, which is an antibacterial product banned in hand soaps by the FDA in 2017. Remin can be found in the major drug chains.

We know how important it is to be mindful of our beautiful planet.

Whenever possible we make a conscious choice to select products that are biodegradable, eco friendly and people friendly. Our office is radiation free as we don’t take x-rays which also require chemicals for developing.

All patient information and charts are electronically filed on a secure software to keep the use of paper to a minimum. We have implemented systems for recycling and are mindful about re-using items that we can effectively sterilize in order to reduce our environmental imprint.

We take pride in being a planet conscious business.

Neena Deol is a registered dental hygienist who graduated from the Canadian Academy of Dental Health & Community Sciences in 2015. Prior to that, Neena worked in administration for Public Health so Neena is grounded in healthcare. When she is not working, Neena enjoys sitting in her backyard oasis surrounded by the trees here in West Vancouver. Come say hi if you see her with her children at Ambleside Beach, shopping in Park Royal or walking her dog Oreo as her 2 younger boys ride their scooters. Whether managing her 7 year old son’s soccer team or supporting her grade 12 son’s school band along the years in various capacities, Neena is an active participating member of the community and her children’s lives.

Neena is passionate about teeth. She is committed to providing an individualized approach to dentistry and whenever needed, referring to the best of the best. One shoe does not fit all so, why should your appointment be the same? Neena specializes in treating patients with dental anxiety and dental phobia, her goal is to create a positive experience and provide the highest level of care, one patient at a time. Neena is also experienced with treating patients with TMJ disorders. Neena goes above and beyond for all her patients, whether you see her at The Happy Hygienist, or in her mobile dental office, she strives to provide you with the best gentle cleaning possible!

Neena has a mobile dental division and works with the First Nations community, providing excellent on-site treatment on reserves and throughout the Lower Mainland incorporating the holistic approach and being respectful of Indian Medicine. When she is not seeing patients. Neena also provides free dental seminars and oral health education to new parents, families with small children and the Elders; as our lives change so does the mouth! Neena loves engaging with the community to create positive experiences because, the last time a person was at the dental office may not have been pleasant. One of her goals is to break down barriers to excellent care; from free whitening, to free dental cleanings, Neena gives back to the Indigenous community one patient at a time.

Neena supports 2 long-term care homes providing free denture cleaning to all the residents and dental services at minimal cost to the patients. Neena is a firm believer that if we all help in our capacity, the world would be a better place. One of her favorite Squamish sayings is: Chén̓chenstway (Lift Each Other Up).

Kim Bergen, DHP

Kim is a registered dental hygienist who graduated from The University of Alberta’s dental hygiene program in 1996. The draw of the mountains and beautiful B.C. took Kim to Revelstoke, Squamish and the North Shore; the West Coast has been Kim’s home for over 20 years. You may run into her on the mountain trails walking her dogs, or out on the local fields watching her daughter play soccer or field hockey.

Kim is committed to providing individualized, quality care with a holistic approach. She loves connecting with people and her genuinely warm personality and gentle touch allow all her patients to feel at ease. Kim provides the same hygiene services found at a dental clinic, with the added benefit of candid, unbiased conversations about dental treatments. You can have open discussions about dental options without having to worry about added costs; there’s no rush in this quaint office setting – only relaxed, quality care.

Kim is passionate about giving back to her community and has a natural desire to provide support to those in need. While Kim has been generous in many causes that feel close to her heart, the two programs she is currently focusing on are Gift From the Heart and Community Veterinary Outreach.

Gift from the Heart happens every year where Dental Hygienists throughout Canada donate dental hygiene treatment to people who are unable to afford it. Contact us for more information or if you know someone who can benefit from this program.

Community Veterinary Outreach is where Veterinarians, Nurses and Dental Hygienists provide an opportunity for people who are living on the street to get their pets checked and their health questions answered by Nurses and Dental Hygienists.
